I know a lot of you can relate to feeling overwhelmed and unsettled in every day life.
We pile so much stuff on our plates, calendars, or to-do lists that there is no possible way to ever get it all done. The result; our joy tank becomes depleted and our homes feel less than peaceful.
Truth is, when I’m overwhelmed, I get cranky and I just want to be alone. I certainly don’t feel like Mom-of-the-Year or Wife-of-the-Year for that matter.
I’m learning that by developing priorities, I can say no to the unnecessary but often urgent and can say yes to the important in my life. Frankly, time with my kids is more important than anything I can buy at the store or any extra activity we can shove into our already tight schedule.
I’m also learning that when I purposely fill my joy tank with scripture, I can easily fill others around me with joy.
This may be a shocker but joy is a choice. What?
Yep, it’s a choice so is peacefulness, calm, tranquility, and any other synonym you want to add here.
We choose joy many ways, including saying no to excess and digging into God’s word.
Case in point – A few days ago, my family went out for a drive. It was so nice. I love my little family but then my husband and I started talking about a little get away we’d like to go on. Sounds pretty good, right?
The problem, my husband wasn’t sure of any details of the trip. I, of course, needed details. I felt an eruption of anxiety within me. I need to book hotels before all of the hotels in the world are booked up!! Well, that’s what it felt like.
My husband sensed this and backed away. Of course, I was becoming short with him. Poor guy.
I had to stop myself right there and say, “he doesn’t know yet, and you don’t have to know yet. It can wait.” This moment with my family was more important than booking a hotel. I felt myself slowly release this anxiety.
I had to remind myself a few times but ultimately I chose let it go for the sake of family fun and peace.
I chose to have peace over checking off a box.
When I’m under pressure, the tone changes. Home or mom shouldn’t be a feeling of rush or anxiety. I guarantee that if you feel this inside, your children and husband do as well. The old saying “If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy” is so true.
We have tremendous power to cultivate a peaceful atmosphere within ourselves. God’s love is ready to surround us and keep us. We simply have to seek it. God said that if you seek it, you will find it.
I want to help you find peace in your every day so you can bask in this moment. Tomorrow will worry about itself but today is a treasure. You’ll miss this treasure if you are focused on other things. Let go and let peace abide in your heart and home today.
