How to Use Your Sermon Notes this Week

July 23, 2019 By Susan 1 Comment

I see so many people searching for the newest and hottest Bible studies or techniques to study the Word. Unfortunately, folks are missing the fresh and new study given each week at their local church. You simply need to use what you have right in front of you. Here’s how to use your sermon notes this week.

Start by convincing yourself that taking sermon notes is important. Then you should have some sort of technique to taking notes so you don’t miss big stuff. If you haven’t read Why You Should Take Notes in Church or How to Take Notes in Church, go check those out and come back here in a bit.

Taking sermon notes is great but if you don’t use them, what’s the point?

Have you ever considered that the expectation should be to use the information provided to us in worship?

Coming to worship should be more than seeing what we can get in a moment of time. Instead we should enter worship with the expectation to retain what we hear. Then we should ask how can we give what we’ve received.

There’s a hurting world out there that needs Jesus. If we keep the wonderful truths for ourselves from our sermons each week, we are doing a disservice to the sermon and God’s word.

Here are some easy ways to use your sermon notes given to you this past Sunday.

Review it – Go back and look at your notes. There are wonderful truths for your life in those notes and you captured them to use them. The first thing to do is review your notes. Do this on Monday.

Pray it – As your reviewing your notes, what is God saying? Use the next page in your journal to write out your prayers. Then say your prayers out loud. Do this on Monday, too.

Write it – A good way to reinforce this week’s sermon is to rewrite it. Write the scripture out then write the bullet points from the sermon. Do this on Wednesday.

Read it again – Wait a few days and read it all again. This way you’ll have several reviews of the sermon and you’ll be ready for a new weeks sermon. Do this on Friday.

Pray for the next sermon – Think about how wonderfully the sermon will speak to you if you spend time praying about it. Pray that God will use the service for you this Sunday! Pray for your pastor, too!! Trust me, he needs some prayers. And think how you’ll feel knowing you lifted up the man of God in your church. Do this on Friday too!!

Use it – When you approach the sermon with a teaching mindset, it not only changes the way we take notes but it changes how we share it with others. How can you use your notes to share your Gods truth this week? Maybe God spoke to your heart about giving more time or money? Find a way to do more this week. One way to use your notes is to simply ask someone if they have a church. Then follow up with “listen to what we learned this week”. Do this throughout the week.

I hope you realize that a great church that has great sermons is full of Bible studies that are fresh each week. This is a great place to start studying the Bible. It’s free and fresh each week.

Drop me a comment below letting me know how you used your sermon notes this week.

One of the simplest lessons to teach our kiddos, is how to love. Yet, parents can struggle with this. It doesn’t have to be a challenge, though. Think about it like this – God is love and we should be like God! Therefore, we should be love. And we should teach our kids to love. […]

3 Things to do when you are overwhelmed

I sat down at the kitchen table and looked around at the mess. My house was a disaster and my heart was heavy thinking about all the things I needed to do. A weight sat on me making it hard to breathe as I looked around at the hot mess in this room. I couldn’t […]

During times of overwhelm, we can inadvertently hold love from our own children. It’s like we get focused on everything else that we don’t share love intentionally anymore. We get sidetracked easily. We have so much to do, right? Who out there feels the pressure to do all the things? It’s gets so overwhelming. Being […]
