Do you feel frazzled? Worn out? Half crazy?
Motherhood is not for the faint of heart.
From the beginning, it’s sleepless nights and excessive bodily fluids (spit up, etc.).
Then there’s a phase of constant hover mode due to little hands causing dangerous scenarios. You know what I mean! They are into everything!! Plugins, shelves, little things found on the floor! Everything becomes dangerous to these little creatures who know no fear. Eesh.
After that there’s the phase of “Mom watch this”, “can we do that”, “I want to watch Mickey”. This is the phase where they can tell you what they want but it’s still demanding.
Here’s a reality check. If you don’t safeguard your sanity, you’ll lose it. You must take care of yourself, your body, and your interests.
If you start feeling overwhelmed, stop and take a break. Take a little break every day to help keep you in a happy place.
In order to optimally care for your children, you must take time for yourself.
Here’s how –
1) Call in reinforcements. Husband, Mamaw, Aunties: it doesn’t matter. If you need a break, get someone you trust to give you an hour to yourself.
2) Do what you love, do what you miss. Now what you choose to do in your hour is up to you. Go to town by yourself, take a bath, sleep, read, watch your favorite show. It doesn’t matter. Do what you love.
3) Take advantage of the small moments. There are little moments through the day that you can take for yourself; nap time, potty time, after the kids bedtime. If you’re in an emergency, fix snack for the kids and go to your room by yourself for a few minutes.
4) Enrich your soul. Do more than just Facebook during your alone moments. Read your scripture, pray and just be still. These are truly luxurious for moms of littles.
Find some time and fill up your bucket today so you can serve your family well. This may be difficult to do but it’s always worth it.
