Summer at my house is relatively lazy.
I like to get stuff done but I pretty much have to make myself. Ha!
So instead of having things that loom over me likes chores ive chosen some enrichment that’s easy and fulfilling too.
This is one task that does exactly what I need.
Our whole family is going to memorize 6 verses this summer. That’s only one per week for six weeks. This plan leaves us several weeks to vacate or just play locally.
This is how we memorize scripture. It meets everyone’s needs and it’s fun to do.
Repeat often.
After you pick your first week to start, commit to repeating the verse A LOT. This is a must do. You have to say it out loud. You have to use it too. Memorizing takes effort. Start with commit to your verse for the whole week.
First letter on card.
This is a great way to learn verses, especially longer verses. Write the first letter of each word on the front of the card in a vertical column. Do the same thing on the back but fill in the rest of the words. This makes the memory work a breeze for adults and older kids.
Jingle.
This works great for smaller kids. And great news, there are tons of videos out there already. Just search the web for your verse and the word song or jingle. See what you can find. You’ll be pleased.
Associate with book, chapter, verse.
This is good for everyone. Make sure you include the book, chapter, and verse. It’s nice to be able to say exactly where the verse is in the Bible. Later on in life you’ll avoid saying “it’s somewhere in the Bible” when you refer to this verse.
Here are my recommendations for summer memory verses. There are several verses in each set. This will give you flexibility for all ages. Memorizing four verses will be a challenge for a teen or tween but a small child will do well with only one verse.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.”
Galatians 5:22-26 ESV
“Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”
Matthew 6:8-15 ESV
“Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.”
Psalms 100:1-5 ESV
“Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people, but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” And he laid his hands on them and went away.”
Matthew 19:13-15 ESV
“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.”
1 John 3:1-3 ESV
“”You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth.”
Deuteronomy 11:18-21 ESV
