How To Get What You Want

How to Get What You Want

In the first post of the series, What is Intentional Living?, I encouraged you to spend some time discovering what you want. Now I will you share how to get it. In order to reach the finish line (that you decided from the last post), you must clear your path, focus your attention and persevere.

Clear Your Path

First things first, when you choose one thing you are ‘un-choosing’ others. You may be clear on what you want but you may want to think about what you can detach from. Make some room in your house, your calendar, or your life so you can achieve your goals. You probably need some wiggle room too. I usually need some.

Currently, I am really wanting to strengthen my morning and evening routines for my whole family. I would like to be able to be on autopilot (habit is established) in a few months. In order to get there I must know what I need to accomplish my goal. I need some reminders of what I need to do. I need everyone in my house to participate. This makes things easier. So if I need time to do certain things of a morning then I need to wake earlier or I need to not do other things that typically fill my schedule. By giving myself some flexibility I’m able accomplish more.

Whatever you want to accomplish, make room for it. This is part of being intentional. Deciding what you don’t want in your life is as important as deciding what you do want.

Focus Your Attention

When you know what you want and you’ve removed things that will get in your way, focus your attention on what you want, like a laser. Don’t let this veer from your focus into your peripheral. If this occurs you’ll miss out on your potential. When things are in your peripheral they are blurry. Put your focus on what you want so it’s clear and you can find your way there. Remember, God gives us free will to make decisions that please Him and bring ourselves and our families closer to Him. It’s up to us to decide what we want and then to get it.

Persevere

This is the hard part. Once you clear your path and train yourself to focus on what you want then you have to keep doing it. Don’t give up. You’ll never get there if you stop or turn a different direction. I tend to get caught off guard by shiny things too. Don’t do that (advice for myself). Keep going and accomplish amazing things!!

Have you ever thought about everything you have to get done in a week? Laundry, dishes, dinner, and a little cleaning needs to get done everyday regardless of anything being on the calendar.
